BLACK ANGELS
As the dynamic duo sped over our heads in the direction of the Operations tent I could tell that something was very wrong, as they didnât wave or acknowledge our presence. The skids of the Loach had barely touched the ground when Butch leapt from it and darted into a nearby tent, where he knew the Colonel would be.
After a couple of minutes they both emerged, and by the looks on their faces the situation wasnât good. The Colonel raised his arm up into the air and around his head which was a signal for us to gather around him. As we surrounded the Colonel he was quick to get to the point as time was running against him regarding some urgent decisions that he needed to make. Seeking a solution he announced âLook gentlemen we have a serious problem out there. Viper-33 is down in a small clearing and its crew are not responding, and if thatâs not enough our 3 Slicks riding top cover are on fumes. Those guys are in a whole heap of trouble and their luck is running out fast. Any ideas folks?â
As everyone looked around the group to see if anyone had a plan, I had a thought that just might work. Taking a deep breath I called out âSir, if you can get me out to the crash site I can assess the situation on the ground and report back to you. All I need is a radio, an M16 and a couple of spare magazines.â The Colonel responded quickly âthanks for the offer Delgado, but youâre still not deemed fit to fly.â I replied âbut Sir Iâm their only chance, we have to give it a shot.â Looking at the expression on his face I could see that his mind was weighing up the options, and it soon became clear that my idea was the only viable one on the table.
âOk Delgado, you wanted the job â you got the job. I think youâre a crazy son of a bitch tho, but a brave one. Now we just got to figure out your means of transportâ stated the Colonel. âSir, Butch and I have this, as weâre still good for gasâ shouted Sundance. âOK guys â just get it on. We need to hustleâ replied the Colonel.
With that we jumped on board the Loach, and had it in the air within minutes of start-up. As Sundance flew us towards the downed Huey, Butch gave me an overview of the ground where it was now lying, and how he thought we should approach it. Over the radio we could hear the other call-signs making us aware that they would be falling out of the sky within minutes, as their fuel levels were now critical. Looking over Butchâs shoulder through the large bubble canopy that was unique to the Loach I could see 3 dots up ahead that represented the circling Slicks over Viper-33.
As we got closer, Sundance ordered them to withdraw as we were now on scene.
